About Rush

+ What is Rush week?

Rush week happens at the beginning of the semester where fraternities/sororities actively recruit new members by hosting events. These events are meant for the potential future members to get to know the active members and vice versa. This is your opportunity to see if Alpha Kappa Psi is a good fit for you.

Our topics are different for each Rush night, refer to our Rush schedule for more details. In general, we will cover the general information about our organization, share our experiences and provide a networking opportunity for the attendees and our Brothers.

+ How do I join the Rush events?

Just come by and join us! All of our rush events (Feb 12th-15th) start at 7pm and are located in the Business building (BUS128). Check out our "Rush Week" section on our website or our Instagram for more information regarding event specifics. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email us at "membership.akpsisfsu@gmail.com" or DM us on Instagram (@sfsu.akpsi)!

+ Do you have to attend all recruitment events in order to qualify for membership?

No. We only require that prospective members attend at least two events for rush week. We understand that individuals have other priorities such as work, school, or personal matters. Although it is not required, we highly recommend our prospective members to take advantage of the multiple events we host to see if Alpha Kappa Psi is a good fit. Coming to our recruitment events will show the Brothers the interest you have in joining if you choose to move on to the interview process. Quality time leads to quality decisions that result in quality members.

+ If I can't make it to the rush nights, where can I get the information?

About Joining/Pledging

+ How do apply for AKPsi?

To apply for AKPsi, sign up for an interview during our rush nights or through the application form on our website. We highly recommend our potential candidates to attend at least 2 rush nights to get a glimpse of who we are and also for us to know you better before the interview. We will contact you after the interview if we feel that you have the potential to become a member.

+ How should I prepare for the interview?

This interview is a chance for us to know you, your goals and passions. Don't worry, this is not an interview for a high executive position. Be yourself and you'll be fine.

You'll have a chance to tell us about yourself. Prepare 1-2 slides for a short presentation abour your passions or experiences or anything about you that you think we should know. You should also prepare a digital copy of your resume and cover letter, and dress to impress.

During our rush week, we would be holding a Professional Development Workshop where you can find a lot of helpful information and tops on improving your resume, cover letter, interview skills, etc.

+ What if I'm not available for the interview day?

Please contact us and let us know your situation as soon as possible so we could accomodate you.

+ What is a bid?

A bid is an invitation to participate in the pledging process in preparation to join our fraternity.

+ When I get a bid, am I officially a Brother/Sister?

Not quite. Upon receiving the bid, there is a probationary period known as "pledging". As a pledge, you'll learn more about the organization and possibly complete tasks to build camaraderie or achieve a collective goal. If you adequately complete the pledging process for several months, you'll attend an initiation ceremony. Only after initiating do you become an official Brother or Sister.

+ If I don't get a bid this semester, can I try again?

Yes! Students are always encouraged to try again if they really want to be a part of Alpha Kappa Psi. There is absolutely no penalty for coming back another time.

+ What is a "pledge"

A pledge is a person who has accepted their bid and undergone a ritual conducted by the fraternity. It is a promise made by the individual to strive to become a full member of the Brotherhood.

+ What is the time commitment of pledging? If I have difficulties with it, who can I go to?

Pledging is one of the important process in order to join AKPsi. Thus, we expect you to involve in 100% in the process. We would say the time commitment is similar to a 3-unit class.

If you have difficulties, feel free to talk to any of the Brothers during Rush night. They can provide you a lot of useful information and advice.

+ How long is the pledging process?

We value your academic and understand the need to focus on classes. The pledging process usually ends between two weeks to one month before finals week.
